How this is calculated
The full methodology is in How Podcasters Can Measure The Cost of Listener Attention.
- Production cost
- Everything it takes to make the episodes: Editing, hosting, scripting, guest fees, equipment, transcription.
- Marketing spend
- Everything it takes to get the episodes heard: Paid ads, social promotion, influencer partnerships, agency retainers.
- Average downloads per episode
- Per episode, not the total across the season. The calculator multiplies by your episode count for you.
- Average consumption rate
- The share of an episode a listener actually finishes. This is the number that separates attention from a download count.
The analytics behind your cost of attention
Your result is only as good as the numbers behind it. Here is where those numbers come from in CoHost, and how to see whose attention you are buying.
Consumption Data
See how much of your podcast people actually hear, pulled from Apple and Spotify. This is where your consumption rate comes from.
AWARENESSAnalytics Dashboards
Watch downloads and unique listeners climb over time, then profile the audience behind them. This is where your downloads per episode comes from.
LISTENER PROFILEB2B Analytics
Identify the companies, job roles, and seniority levels engaging with your show, so you know whether you are buying attention from your target accounts.
A download is not proof anyone listened.
